10 Things to Do for $10 or Less
Too often we’ve fallen victim to the “rainy day” fund running a little shallow. Luckily, you can still enjoy some pretty great afternoons out without emptying your pockets in Webster County! We’ve collected a list of some penny-pincher activities that are sure to please without ever coming close to breaking the bank this fall!
Take A Hike – With thousands of acres of national forest tucked within the counties limits, the dizzying number of trails in the area are enough to keep your feet scuttling along for days at a time! Try the Cranberry Wilderness or Holly River areas! FREE
Go Cruisin’ – It’s not too late to go leaf peeping in these parts just yet! Take a trip along the Mountain Parkway and take the time to stop and take in the views of the valley while following a number of historic markers and signs, unraveling history the whole way. FREE
Pack A Picnic – Roll up a big blanket and pack a lunch for two and head to the park for a cool, fall picnic setting. Baker’s Island, Big Ditch Lake, and the Holly River State Park all offer easily accessible areas for picnicking, benches for seating and of course some killer views. FREE
Throw Out A Line – Boasting several rivers and streams, Webster County is home to some of North America’s finest angling. The waters are often brimming with trout, smallmouth bass, rock bass and catfish. Listed among the WV DNR’s “Favorite fishing waters” are the Elk, Cranberry, and Williams Rivers. FREE
Biking -- Cyclists looking for anything from a mountain biking adventure to an exhilarating road biking challenge can find something to suit their tastes in Webster County. Many trails in the Holly River State Park and the Monongahela National Forest are suited for mountain biking enthusiasts, while the Williams River Road, Highland Scenic Highway and many other paved rural roads appeal to those looking for a “paved” outing. Canoe/Kayak – Big Ditch Lake serves as an excellent spot to unload the canoe or kayak and hit the water. As only electric motors are allowed on the lake, the water remains calm year-round, perfect for teaming up and rowing around the lake! FREE
Thrifty Thrift Shopping – Go on a fashion shopping montage with a friend without ever feeling the sting from an ugly price tag! Country Thrift and the Quarter Store offer mega selections of quality second-hand items for cheap and the inventory is never the same twice! $1-$10
Take In The Art – Take a trip to the Visitors Center and view a plethora of handmade and homegrown artisan works ranging from functional pottery to quilting and everywhere in between! FREE
Grab A Dog – A hotdog that is… and throw a little chili on it at the Custard Stand! With a load of toppings to choose from, there’s something for everyone and it won’t cost you much either! $3-$7
Have A Slice – Sit down at the Addison Café and enjoy a hearty slice of homemade pie – even throw in a cup of coffee if you like! They’ve always got a flavor sure to please. $5-$9
